Happy January from Northville4Bees!

We’re excited to share our first newsletter of the new year and kick off 2026 with a recent highlight from our community outreach. Northville4Bees is a student-led initiative based in Northville, Michigan, focused on supporting pollinators through education, seed sharing, and hands-on community action. While winter is typically a quieter season for planting, it’s an important time for connection, learning, and planning what’s ahead.

This month, we had the opportunity to participate in a seed swap and host a hands-on seed ball workshop at the Indian Springs Environmental Discovery Center. Events like these remind us how impactful activities can be when it comes to starting conversations about pollinators, native plants, and everyday actions people can take to make a difference.

Spotlight: Small Actions, Real Impact

This Month’s Feature: Seed Swap and Why Seed Balls Matter

This month, we’re excited to share highlights from our recent seed swap and hands-on seed ball workshop at Indian Springs earlier today on January 31st, and to reflect on why seed balls continue to play such an important role in our mission!

The event brought together community members of all ages and we’re so thankful for everyone that was able to come! More than 30 people jumped in to make seed balls with us during our workshop, and throughout the day we connected with over 50 community members to talk about pollinators, native plants, and simple ways to make a difference. We loved how naturally the activity brought people together. Kids, parents, and adults all got involved, and the table quickly became a space for learning, sharing ideas, and asking great questions.

Our Hands-on Workshop

Some of our favorite moments came from conversations about planting seed balls along trails, replacing sections of lawn with native plants, and hearing community members share the ways they already support pollinators at home. The hands-on nature of the workshop made these conversations easy and frequent, and it was clear that people genuinely enjoyed learning by doing.

Our Seed Balls

Seed balls were a natural choice for this event. They are not about being perfect or precise. Their real strength is how easy they are to use and share. Seed balls lower the barrier to getting started with native planting and make pollinator support feel accessible to everyone, regardless of age or experience. You do not need special tools, gardening expertise, or a large space. They help turn curiosity into action and make conservation feel welcoming rather than intimidating. We believe that getting as many people as possible involved in planting native seeds and supporting pollinators is one of the most meaningful ways to create change in our communities!
