Happy early winter from Northville4Bees!

We’re excited to share our third newsletter with you! We apologize for a bit of a delay, but we are still adjusting our schedule and planning to deliver a new one each month!

As a quick refresher, Northville4Bees is a student-led initiative started by high schoolers in Northville, MI, dedicated to supporting pollinators through education, seed sharing, and community action.

We’re proud to announce that our Northville4Bees High School Club is up and running, and our first meeting happened a few weeks ago! Students in our age group can join to learn, share, and make a difference in our after-school meetings!

This Month’s Feature: Bee Pollination

This month, we’re diving into the world of pollination. Discover how bees help our plants, gardens, and food thrive, and why these tiny pollinators are more important than ever.

Pollination is one of those processes that most people know exist, but few really think about. Yet nearly every meal we eat, every garden we grow and enjoy, and every ecosystem we rely on is tied to this single phenomenon; and at the center of it are the bees. In this newsletter, we’re going to be taking a look at the link between bees, and the flowers and plants in the world around us!

Flower Anatomy

Pollination begins with flowers. Each flower has two key parts: the anther (which produces pollen) and the stigma (which releases it). For a plant to reproduce and make seeds, pollen must travel from the anther to the stigma. This can happen by wind, water, or even gravity, but the most efficient method is pollination by pollinators, such as bees. Therefore, plants utilize UV light, scent, and more (even electrostatic attraction!) to bring bees to themselves. When a bee lands on a flower to collect nectar, the pollen from the plant sticks to fuzzy hairs on its body. This pollen rubs off on the next flower as it lands on it, spreading the pollen from one plant to another. This small transfer is exactly what allows plants to produce fruit, seeds, vegetables, etc. One bee can visit hundreds of flowers in a single trip, making them some of the most effective pollinators on the planet!

Bee Anatomy

Bees are uniquely built just for pollination. Their hairy bodies, specialized pollen baskets on their hind legs (corbicula) and flying habits make them superior pollinators. Nearly ⅓ of our food comes directly from pollination, with most of it reliant on bees! Unfortunately, habitat loss, heavy use of pesticides, climate change and lack of floral diversity are leading to sharp declines in bee population; all things we’ve been discussing at Northville4Bees this summer and fall. With the huge impact that bees have directly on our food supply, a decrease in bees could lead to catastrophically changes in entire ecosystems, and it’s extremely important that we take this seriously.

The Pollination Cycle

Of course, the topic of pollination is a vast, intricate science, just like any branch of biology, and this newsletter barely scratches the surface of it. But we just wanted to put pollination on your radar this month as the planting season comes to a close: just imagine how much of it has been done by our favorite pollinators this year alone!!

Protecting bees means protecting our environment, and our food system. One of the best ways to help them out (other than planting native flowers, supporting pollination gardens, and avoiding pesticides, of course) is to learn about the importance of bees and how exactly they help pollinate the food we eat each and every day.
