Happy Fall from Northville4Bees!

We’re excited to share our second newsletter with you! We had a bit of a delay, but we are still planning to deliver a new one each month!

Northville4Bees is a student-led initiative started by high schoolers in Northville, MI, dedicated to supporting pollinators through education, seed sharing, and community action.

We’re proud to announce that our Northville4Bees High School Club is up and running, and our first meeting will be in a few weeks! Students in our age group can join to learn, share, and make a difference in our upcoming after-school meetings!

Spotlight: Bee Basics/Biology

Did you know…

All bees have five eyes: two large ones on the sides and three small ones to help with navigation!
Bees can see ultraviolet, blue, and green but not red, so many flowers have UV patterns to guide them to nectar!
Bees have special hairs on their legs called scopae to collect and carry pollen!

This Month’s Feature: What Northville4Bees Has Been Up To

This month, we’re sharing the latest buzz from Northville4Bees! From community events to school initiatives, there’s plenty that we’re excited to share with you!

September and the start of October have been an exciting stretch for Northville4Bees in many ways! We started off by attending our first-ever seed swap at the Lyon Township Public Library on September 22. There, we connected with local community members and seed-saving experts, including Bevin Cohen, a nationally recognized leader in the seed-saving community. He told us some awesome stories, such as how they were able to spread some unique species of corn, beans, and tomatoes, along with reminding us of the importance of the seeds’ history. This was some amazing insight for our own journey in helping the pollinators, because we can now connect Bevin’s stories with our prior understanding of native wildflowers and other plants! Overall, it was great hearing from passionate gardeners and bee-supporters alike during the seed swap. We can’t wait for the chance to attend more events like these, or even host our own, and connect with even more people!

During this time, Northville4Bees was also buzzing behind the scenes to launch our very own Northville4Bees Club at Northville High School. This past Tuesday, October 13, the school held its annual club fair, where students could explore all the clubs available at NHS. We were thrilled at the outcome of the fair, receiving over 30 sign-ups to join our new club. Support also came from faculty, with multiple teachers and staff members showing genuine enthusiasm, as well as sharing how excited they were to see a club actually focused on bees and pollinators. It was amazing to see so many of our peers so eager to learn about bees, pollinators, and how to protect them! We have lots of goals for the future of the Northville4Bees school club, and can’t wait to share them with you as they develop!

These experiences over the last few weeks reminded us why we started Northville4Bees: to connect our community around a shared mission of protecting pollinators. From hearing inspirational and heartwarming stories at the seed-swap to seeing motivated peers at the Club Fair, we’ve seen firsthand how small actions can spark real change. With a few events behind us, many more ahead, and our school club about to be in full swing, we’re only just getting started and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next as Northville4Bees continues to bloom!
